Vintage Mid-Century Family Nest
A delightful family with two young children came across a diamond in the rough in Oakland and called on MODTAGE design to assist in bringing a cohesive vision to the space.
The home had been well-kept but was outdated and in need of work. The previous owner was a cabinetmaker and built some beautiful walnut custom-fit cabinetry in the home. MODTAGE design helped decipher what to keep and what to modify. The old smoky grasscloth wallcovering darkened the space and was the first to go. Although it had great retro appeal, it didn't fit the vibe of the new homeowners whom had a more modern aesthetic. The old carpets were removed to reveal a beautiful oak floor with walnut inlay below which was quickly repaired and refinished in preparation for move-in. MODTAGE helped guide the homeowners with these early decisions, keeping in mind the overall vision.
Two bathrooms in the home underwent a full remodel; gutting the space to the studs and starting fresh with improved and updated layouts. Keeping consistency in the home, MODTAGE guided the design of these spaces to provide a connection to some of the walnut cabinets the previous owner had built. In the full bath, a custom designed double vanity helped provide more space for the family to share the bathroom while tall cabinets on either end and large pull out drawers provided ample storage. A new window provided much needed ventilation while maintaining privacy and allowed obscured visibility to and existing bougainvillea when in bloom. In the smaller half bath, the limited space was better utilized using plumbing fixtures appropriate to proportions of the room.
MODTAGE is excited to start a new phase of work with this family; updating the existing vintage kitchen to a more functional and modern-day layout with plans to extend and open the back wall to better connect the backyard with the interior of the home. The extensive available attic space will be further enhanced to provide a full master suite.
